Myth: You will have a job if you have a contract from your employer.

Truth: In some cases, this myth is false. The number of fake employment contracts through some agencies is rising. Be aware you might not have a job at all. Usually you will still find a job however it may take a week or more and require you to apply at many different restaurants, hotels, etc.. to find a job.

Helpful hints: Try to check with your employer online. The best solution is to ask your friends who have already been in the USA for any contacts of reliable employers and try to obtain a job with one of those referred companies.

Myth: You will work the same hours and get the same wage as initiated in your contract.

Truth: The number of hours during the week may vary according to weekly schedule, time of the vacation season, your work performance or even weather. Your wage may differ from the contract; it always depends on the employer. You can get the pay raise after a certain period or bonus pay check if you stay up to certain date (the end of the peak season).

Myth: It is easy to get a second job.

Truth: Not always. In the middle of the season all positions are usually already taken. What is really important is the better English you speak, the better the job you can get, and the more money you will make. Good English skills will usually ensure that you will be able to find two jobs.

Myth: Social Security card arrives within 2 weeks.

Truth: If you are staying in a place with a lot of international students, it usually takes up to 4 weeks for the card to arrive if it is being mailed to your residence. Most employers allow you to begin working before you are issued the Social Security Card provided you display for them the Card Application paperwork.

Hint: Make sure you choose the right place for a card to be delivered. It can be either your employer or have it delivered to the Social Security office or the city hall (if they provide this option). If your card gets lost in the mail, you will have to apply again and it will take another few weeks to get it.
