SWIMMING IN THE OCEAN - Useful tips:

What to do about jellyfish?

When you come to a contact with jellyfish tentacles the result is a red welt and severe pain. What to do? Wash the area with a mild soap and water, and then apply liberal amounts of meat tenderizer (MSG, Accent) to the still wet area. Benadryl will help lessen the reaction. If the reaction worsens see a physician.

Be aware of rip currents !!! Do not overestimate your swimming ability!!!

The currents are formed when water rushes out to sea in a narrow path. This happens when there is a break in a nearshore sandbar or the current is diverted by a groin, jetty or other barrier. A rip current is not an "undertow" - it will not pull you under.

If you’re caught in a rip current, don’t panic or swim against the current. Swim parallel to shore until you are out of the current. If you can’t break out of the current, float calmly until it dissipates, usually just beyond the breakers. Then swim diagonally to shore. If you don’t swim well, stay in wading depths and watch for sudden drop-offs. For more information, visit www.usla.org/beach_safety/rip_current1.asp. The best policy is to always swim near a Life Guard on the Coastal Ocean Beaches. They are trained and can quickly assist any swimmers in distress.
